Mattia Carfagna VDF Le Serail
The grapes saw a two week maceration and were foot-trodden in fiberglass. The grapes for this wine come from 80-100 year old vines spread across nine parcels. Prior to Mattia taking them over, they were all abandoned. At 13hl/ha, the yields are incredibly low.
Le Sérail translates to "the seraglio", a castle, palace or government building which was considered to have particular administrative importance in various parts of the former Ottoman Empire. Mattia elaborates:
"It is a seraglio of belonging, more as a farmer to the land than something political: old vines and tradition. In the seraglio, within the palace of the pacha, is the place where one keeps their treasures including the harem. It also refers to the "caravan sérail, a place where people of different origins can exchange their culture and merchandise."
