Jura’s three primary red grapes, Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot noir, share the characteristic of a very bearable lightness of being; they typically produce lighter colored wines that are exceptionally full flavored. The color-flavor ratio is astonishing. “Ploussard”, which refers to the grape’s prune shape, adores the gray shale soils of Jura allowing a dazzling explosion of fruit and stone. Its native brother, Trousseau, originated in Franche-Comté in the 18th century and is spicy, intense and similarly lighter colored. Pinot noir has been in Jura since the 15th century and it offers Burgundian-like minerality, finesse and complexity; it will surprise you. As has been done for centuries, it is produced from co-fermented vines of all three grapes and aged for four years in old casks before release. It is cool wine: juicy, dry, pure and with steely definition and superior length. Another consideration is the price, it becomes both a beautiful archetype of Jura’s red wine and a terrific value.
