Bodegas D. Mateos, Letargo Crianza 2021
Spain · Rioja Oriental · Red · 750ml
Bodegas D. Mateos has been farming the slopes of Monte Yerga in Aldeanueva de Ebro — the heart of Rioja Oriental — for over 150 years. The family's vineyards are old, many of them gobelet-trained with an average age close to 45 years, planted in clay-loam soils at elevations where Mediterranean heat and altitude combine to give the wines real concentration and grip. The Letargo line is their classic expression: honest Rioja, built from the estate's Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, and Mazuelo, all hand-harvested at full physiological ripeness. The 2021 spent 12 months in a mix of new and second-use French (70%) and American (30%) oak barrels, then another 12 months in bottle before release — clarified naturally in barrel, racked every four months, no shortcuts.
In the glass: bright ruby with good depth and a violet edge. The nose leads with licorice and stewed fruit — dried apricot, plum, sour cherry — wrapped in warm barrel notes of vanilla, spice, and a whisper of toasted bread. The palate is long and full, with a sharp backbone of acidity keeping everything in check. The finish runs through dried plum and vanilla with a savory, mineral close. Classic Rioja that punches well above its price.
